Susan Breen has returned to birds as inspiration throughout her artistic life, like some needed and evolving refrain. Particularly in difficult times, these ethereal and sublime creatures lift and inspire her. Emily Dickinson’s poem “Hope” is the thing with feathers resonates through this series. The most recent works–which juxtapose expressionistic and representational paint handling–have helped the artist navigate the pandemic, providing a source of necessary light against the darkness and collective grief.
