Squares within Squares

Susan Breen

Susan Breen’s squares series began formally as a nod to Josef Albers’ Homage to the Square, ultimately yielding to a changing world within each frame. Against and at play with the geometry of the square, natural forms float, turn, bloom, grow, and overgrow. Systems fill up and spill over. Vines twist and flourish, alluding to some universal circuitry. They were inspired by the artist’s fascination with the juxtaposition of order and chaos, the illusion of opposites, the evolution of form through repetition, and systemic entropy.
