Cristina’s World: Chronicles of Evolution
October 27 – December 23, 2000
Woodward Gallery
In her most recent cycle of oil paintings, Cristina Vergano compiles an alternative natural history by creating pseudo-scientific records of imaginary human and animal hybrids throughout the centuries. Her mythical subjects spanning the last 500 years are lovingly rendered within rich historical tableaux, or in lush natural surroundings.
In the context of Vergano’s lyrical view of evolution, each specimen, because of its variance from the norm, becomes a symbol of poignant individuality.
In Cristina’s World, those in the margins of evolution have as much dignity as those who prevail. Being flawed is being human.
