SKEWVILLE
March – April, 2012
Woodward Gallery Project Space
Skewville is an art collective consisting of two twin brothers born and raised in Queens, NY. The term Skewville has many meanings, referring to the warped structure of the home Ad & twin brother, Droo lived in 1996, as well as to the twins’ crooked sense. Skewville is most known for its public art, the most popular example being their hand made wooden sneakers that they have been tossing over telephones lines and documenting since 1999. Since then thousands have been silkscreened, hand cut. drilled, laced, and then tossed all around the globe.

This summer, as part of Woodward Gallery’s year-long 20th Anniversary Exhibition calendar, a Retrospective of Public Art will be featured. The mural from the outdoor wall of their Eldridge Street Project Space will be presented in unison, a massive installation covering the Gallery’s large interior space.
Woodward Gallery designated the public wall at 132A Eldridge for Street Artists to legally paint. Since 2008, invited Artists were asked to create a four panel work of art approximately 15 feet (457 cm) in total size. Over the years, this exterior wall of the Gallery’s annex–GHOST Art Lounge, has become a NYC attraction with thousands of Twitter and Instagram pictures shared to date!

From the Street Up is a selection of celebrated urban artists who concentrate their creativity without walls. For centuries, humans leave tracks, symbols, and objects to record their location, time, and experience. It is an ancient form of documentation.
Woodward Gallery invited Artists Royce Bannon and Cassius Fouler to co-curate the exhibition. Each of the featured Artists are noted for their Public or Street art: John Ahearn, Michael Alan, Richard Hambleton, Robert Janz, NohJColey, Miguel Ovalle, Leon Reid IV, Skewville, Gabriel Specter, stikman, and UFO.
Since most people walk while looking down, urban artists can capture this line of vision by carefully selecting the location for their street sculpture to exist. The principals of concentration, curation and location help define the essence of the project. Removing the vulnerable factor by isolating the work indoors, permits us to finally experience the full theory behind the art–the creative focus of defying gravity. The exhibition walls are bare as the work is presented from the street up.
