Louise Peabody

Peace
January 10 – February 28, 2009
Woodward Gallery

Woodward Gallery is pleased to open the new year with Louise Peabody’s universal message of peace embodied in paintings of female forms in repose.

Louise Peabody’s contented figures transform the Gallery environment into a tranquil place of meditation. Empowered with the ability to elicit quietude in her subjects, Peabody’s work softly emits a calmness not easily conveyed. Peabody drapes her reclining figures with bed linens and sheets both respecting their forms and providing undulating rhythm.

In earlier series, Louise Peabody’s bodylines were well positioned as the horizon; her women became “nudescapes”. In this new series of oil paintings and drawings presented side-by-side, the subjects exude a lasting, uniform serenity. A perfect antidote for our current anxiety.
Peabody’s stable vision of peace is the calming necessity for this time of change.
