March – May 2023
Woodward Gallery

Woodward Gallery presents GROUP SEVEN, an exhibition focusing on seven artists and their varied techniques of painting. Though AI and NFT art production has captured quite a bit of public speculation, we are taking a closer look at more traditional, yet compelling techniques for making tangible art. Specifically, Woodward Gallery’s current exhibition, GROUP SEVEN, features the painted work of Jose Aurelio Baez, Deborah Claxton, Cosbe, RH DOAZ, Mark Mastroianni, Daniel Rosenbaum, and Francesco Tumbiolo and their varied methods.

Together, these artists modernize the traditional artistic mediums of painting with exciting, contemporary twists. Jose Aurelio Baez collages advertisements and wallpaper to create urban-styled paintings. Deborah Claxton hand-cuts numerous bits of tiny pieces of paper under a magnifying glass to construct her almost photographic image. Cosbe harnesses his raw emotions onto found objects to create striking works of art. RH DOAZ is a known street, public, and mural Artist who contemplates humanity and the natural world in his work. Similarly, Mark Mastroianni has mastered Casein milk paint to achieve a smooth surface with natural shapes and patterns found in stone, granite, and ice. Abstract painter Daniel Rosenbaum imagines an unnatural environment conjuring a new reality. Francesco Tumbiolo paints ambiguous gestural figures in primary colors, inviting the viewer to participate. Each Artist in GROUP SEVEN presents their own style of painting technique in contrast to the absurd notion that tangible art has lost its relevancy in the Contemporary Art World.

GROUP SEVEN is on view in Woodward Gallery’s street-level windows from March to May 2023. Please plan to visit in person 24/7 from our street-level exhibition windows, and by private appointment. It is available with a full-color catalogue on our website and also online, on Artsy.net and  Widewalls.ch.

Mark Mastroianni’s intense layers of swirling multi-hued minutia symbolize creation of living, allowing for mystery of the unknown. Ivan Pazlamatchev colorful paintings, dreamlike visions in human and landscape passages have mythic presence.

Woodward Gallery

Woodward Gallery launches their 20TH Anniversary Year with the group exhibition Sur-Real.
The exhibition title emphasizes each part of the word surreal to give us pause to search for the fantasy in each featured artist’s imagination. With broad strokes or subtle detail, new visions for what seem possible are evoked.

The individual artists step outside of the fundamental world of life and enter another dimension of the creative process. They work in fine contemporary painting, street art backgrounds, paper collage and screenprinting techniques, yet release the creative potential of their unconscious mind. Their work liberates our existence with insight into a new artistic reality.

The selected Artists: Jean-Michel Basquiat, Thomas Buildmore, Deborah Claxton, Sybil Gibson, Richard Hambleton, Kosbe, David Larson, Mark Mastroianni, Margaret Morrison, NoseGo, Kenji Nakayama, Dennis Oppenheim, Robert Rauschenberg, James Rosenquist, stikman, Jeremy Szopinski, Francesco Tumbiolo, Jo Ellen Van Ouwerkerk, Cristina Vergano, Kurt Vonnegut Jr. and Andy Warhol are an influential force reinterpreting our conventional thoughts and expressions.

Natural Wisdom
September 8 – October 28, 2012
Woodward Gallery

Opening the Fall 2012 Art Season is Mark Mastroianni’s “Natural Wisdom” exhibition at Woodward Gallery. Mastroianni returns to his unique gessoed tarpaper and mixed media paintings he had begun working with twenty years ago. The once abstract qualities in his work have now shifted toward a representational clarity and yet, Mastroianni continues to convey what he has always evoked so extraordinarily well: the soul of our objective world. The new body of work is imprinted with history: a lifespan, rather than a captured state.

Mastroianni’s transfigured representation creates something far more powerful than technically accurate rendering of familiar objects. Here, the realism of his fences, snowballs, hay bales, and salt mounds, is subordinated to a more primal force leaching from the color and light. The deeply graphic quality of each scene, the hyper-relief of lines and crevices that overtakes each piece, actually removes the representational aspect just enough to startle us. The effect is like that of a dream we recall for its precise details, for the emotional power of those details, made all the more potent because of how distorted they are in the waking reality of our lives.

The magic of Mark Mastroianni’s “Natural Wisdom” is in how each piece triggers our own memory of what it contains. His imagery become the ghosts of our own imprints in life, our own personal associations with common objects.

Here lives the great empathy of this work. Artist Mark Mastroianni has created a series of delivery systems of our own capacity for memory. These littered tree trunks, snowballs, dead sunflowers. The seasonal shifts of light and color, the moody silences and cold snaps. They are our past the moment we step into the work. Their mystery reminds us of ourselves, of how we live inside everything around us.

Mark Mastroianni & Rick Begneaud
May 16 – July 25, 2009
Woodward Gallery

Artists Mark Mastroianni & Rick Begneaud breathe new life into their mixed media paintings.
Mark Mastroianni has been for over a decade contemplating the life-sustaining properties of water. As an international artist, Mastroianni had found tarpaper the most reliable medium to transport. Mastroianni’s tarpaper paintings are built up into a smooth surface. The Artist uses this glacial surface to glide on abstracted images of floating embryos, reflections of light and the motion of currents. Mastroianni may add branches or other organic elements to sum up his unity with nature. His paintings offer peaceful beginnings–drops of hope.

Rick Begneaud, a Cajun South Louisiana native, has also travelled extensively. He appropriates textiles and small elements from villages throughout the world to embody those locations from a different perspective. He aptly combines paint, collaged with fabrics to create abstracted, angular shapes pulsating with rich color. His special preservation of found items morph into new creations. The exhibition will be Rick Begneaud’s New York premiere.

Mastroianni and Begneaud’s intention to preserve the spirit of life is their unifying force. Together their body of abstract work conveys life’s circumstances regenerated into intriguing visual signs.
